Marshal Vasily Elizarov was killed during the Rally Siberia, an autocross race organized by the Federation of Automobile Sports of Transbajkalia, when an out of control car crashed into raised platform where the marshals watched the race.

The accident occurred on Sunday, 02 October 2016, near the town of Omsk, in Omsk Oblast, southwestern Siberia, Russia. Tragedy struck during a special stage of the rally, when the blue painted Lada 1800 #37 of Vyacheslav Kholmogorov, 39, from Čita, Transbajkalia, Russia, left the road, flying through the air after being rammed by another competing car driven by Nikolay Kumanek, 38, from Tjumen. Kholmogorov's vehicle was sent into the control tower which was completely destroyed upon impact.

Two marshals who were watching the race from the control tower, were severely injured. Vasily Elizarov, 54, died shortly after the crash, on the way to Omsk hospital. His assistant, Natalia Koreneva, a 34-year-old mother of one, was transferred to the intensive care unit of the hospital, after suffering head injuries. The driver of the car which smashed into the control post, climbed out of the wreckage with only minor injuries.
