The Grand Prix des Nations held at Mugello began between light and shadows for Paolo Tordi: he scored the best time in Wednesday practice, but then he fell twice in the following sessions. He started the 350 cm3 race in fifth place, but during the second lap he suddenly slid at Biondetti corner suffering severe injuries to the chest to which he succumbed while being transported to the hospital of Luco, around 13h00. Fellow rider Chas Mortimer, who was closely following the Italian, stated: "We were four: me, Tordi, Bonera and Giansanti. Suddenly Tordi's motorbike lifted up, possibly because of a seizure".
