I always remember what someone who was at Williams (it might have been Dernie) said about Piquet and Mansell. This is to paraphrase a little, but it was along the lines of 'When Nelson left, the mechanics threw him a party. When Nigel left, the mechanics threw themselves a party'.[New!] Ranking Nigel Mansell's F1 Cars

Post that again next week Matt, it's my birthdayMatt wrote: ↑3 years ago I always remember what someone who was at Williams (it might have been Dernie) said about Piquet and Mansell. I dunno what the truth is tbh. Nelson claimed most of the team was against him. But then you get a lot of claims that Mansell was a total pain to work with
Both of them did the business in different ways
I do especially like that quote because piquet was a mechanic who became a driver

I just posted an article on Mansell's time at McLaren. They definitely threw a party when he left
I will probably introduce the final two Lotuses near the end. I want to establish the order of the remaining Williams cars and the two Ferraris separately, then slip those into place also. I expected the MP4/10 to be plum last so people might surprise us with the number one choice, but I don't think soMatt wrote: ↑3 years ago I think that list is pretty fair so far. The problem with Nigel's cars is that barring a few, there aren't really any true stinkers so we are having to choose between some very good cars. That does make this a very interesting exercise, mind - great choice going for Mansell!
(I think we all know which car is going to be number 1, right?)
As for what's next - I think possibly looking at the two remaining Lotuses that Nigel drove might help somewhat. We have the 94T from the last half of 1983

So, folks, the bottom of the list is looking well populated. Let's jump straight to the top.
Is there any doubt at all that the 1992 Williams is the best car on this list by far?

Nope! Followed by the 1987 car.

By far is certainly debatable. By the time Piquet had fiddled with the Fw11 and Mansell had swanned in it was totally decimating the opposition on power tracks
The 14 likely the better all round machine but I'd like to see some more analysis
It's interesting that Williams had these periods of total domination, but something always changed and they went backwards

The 1992 Williams is number 1 for me, no doubt.
@Cheeveer - why 1987 over 1986?

so, time to rank 10 more cars (we agree that the '92 Williams is number #1).

I'd do the 94T (mid-to end 83 car) at the bottom of that top 10 (= 11th overall)
followed by the Lotus91 (1982) and Lotus95T (1984). The former is a race winner, the latter is not - but overall the '84 car performed better than the '82 car.
getting the Lotae' out of the way, with only the Ferrari's and Williams' remaining seems fair.

I agree that the FW14B should be at the top of the heap. That was a simply awesome car that could likely beat several championship winning cars from different eras.
Although it's hard to think the 94T was much better than the 87 or some of the others in the lower regions. I'm almost thinking it should be 13th or 12th. Anyone else have thoughts on that? I mean from Nigels perspective the MP4/10 was a dog, but Mika had some decent results with it (4th, 5th, and two 2nd places).
The one thing going for the 94T over the 87 is the 3rd place Nige achieved in the 94T. So I would put the 94T in 12th below the MP4/10.
I'm also not 100% sure we will not slot a few of the remaining cars in between some of these Loti, so don't engrave the trophies just yet.
And I agree with Antonov's assessment of the last two Loti. The 91 won a race, but mostly due to luck, where the 95T was a regular podium finisher.
