Epic Rock Songs

#1

Post by futuretiger9 »

The epic rock song, i.e. a grandiose song lasting over five minutes which captures the public imagination, seems to be a thing of the past.

Here are some of my favourites:-

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Deep Purple - Child In Time
Genesis - Supper's Ready
Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird
Queen - March of the Black Queen
Neil Young - Like A Hurricane
Derek and The Dominoes - Layla (Album version)
Bob Dylan - Desolation Row
The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again

Any more to add to the above list?

The universe, look at the hugeness of it... it is a dizzying thought that little ol' me is the centre of it all!***

Metallica - "Master of Puppets"
Steve Vai - "For the Love of God"
RUSH -"2112"

I hate being limited to "Rock". It's all music, anyway.
What if?

Arguably the greatest rock epic:

Got a bit of Black Mountain Woman in the intro, too.

Compared to some of the stuff posted so far, this has got to be an epic as well:

Middle of the Road, yeah, hehe...wish they are, when I'm coming round in my car...

Hehehe, well, I know what you're saying, but technically:

"Last night I heard my mother singing a song" would in itself qualify as an epic, however idiotic, in the sense that it is narrative, as opposed to lyrical.

But I agree, the true Epic needs something more. Bo Rhap is so much more than an epic, its completely, well, bizarre, really. Unique rock song.

I'm not sure if this counts as epic, but I'll throw it in here anyway. Even if its not epic, its still a damn good song.

Manowar's Achilles, Agony & Ecstasy In Eight Parts is quite epic too, a 28 minute long song! A really incredible song!

THen there are the classics like Child in time, no matter how many times I hear it, it keeps on interesting me! Bohemian rhapsody is another one. Stairway too heaven, 14 years by G'nR is also a nice long song.

Aerosmith doesn't really have 'epic' album songs, but they do have a killer 8 minute long live version of 'rats in the cellar', with fast parts, bluesy parts, screaming parts, etc sadly they don't often play that song. I've seen them 8 times now, but I've never seen that particular song live. But one day I will...

'long and epic' songs are still made, but mostly by non mainstream bands I think. Furthermore I think these songs simply don't stand a chance anymore. If Child in time would not exist, and some band would come up with it, I wonder if it would even make the charts. The last 'long' song that really was a big hit I think was November rain by Guns 'n Roses in the early 90s.

Therion for example has often longer epic symphonic metallesque songs on their albums. Even Turisas has a couple of long epic like songs (stories).
