Described as "Black Sunday". They managed to put the wrong year in this article:

Another interview:

12 crashes, perhaps that's an exaggeration, in any case the only one I've ever seen anything from is Chuck Hulse's flip, which is here (it's even the exact same photo):

If I recall that incident correctly, Wente suffered a puncture in a collision with another car and slowed, leaving Hulse with nowhere to go. That was a bad day: Hulse's career never recovered, and Jimmy Maguire lost an arm in another accident after the restart. Several more cars flipped, but Wente eventually recovered to take second, his best ever finish in Big cars!
So, anything else about this fateful day would be appreciated. Seems strange that I'm unable to locate anything other than that one pic.

This clip from the right year shows an accident at 3:16-3:26, but I have no way of knowing which race this was, Jud Larson won 3 out of four of them that year, so it's one of the first 3, but not necessarily from "Black Sunday".

Well, it does say "July 26, 1964" on the video right at the beginning, and so it is because it's the only one of the three where Branson finished second and Foyt third. Crashes in the main involved Mickey Rupp, Don Hewitt (Jack's dad), Steve Stapp, Bob Harkey and Dee Jones.

I've seen enough wrong dating to not trust them automatically. But this time, it does add up quite nicely.

The "main" or "feature race" being the actual race, the final one, the 14 cars (and there are), listed here:

http://www.ultimateracinghistory.com/ra ... aceid=5206

If the chronology is intact, and there's no mixing of footage datewise, then the pile-up shown must be from there. Running start, then they come around again, then the accident, which would fit the stats, as it happened on lap 2, because the 5 cars out are all listed as having completed one lap. It's the same with racingsportscars and champcarstats, the number of laps is the number completed, meaning if someone has for instance [Laps: 31 DNF Accident Turn 1], then the accident happened on that cars lap 32. Lap no. plus one. Obviously.

This video undoubtedly shows the sprintcar accident of Mickey Rupp, Don Hewitt, Steve Stapp, Bob Harkey and Dee Jones on the backstretch in 1964 at New Bremen. So it was not on "Black Friday", and nothing to do with Maguire, but some bonus info.

From Jesper:

"Jim Maguire's USAC Sprintcar crash (6) during feature race at New Bremen.

Pic is not gory, but the crash inflicted injuries that caused the later amputation of his arm.

https://www.masslive.com/racinwithjason ... edway.html

He later returned to racing."
