Ken Kavanagh (Norton) 1951 Senior Ulster Grand Prix

In 1952, Kavanagh became the first Australian to win a motorcycle Grand Prix race when he won the 350cc Ulster Grand Prix. In 1956, he won the Junior TT at the Isle of Man TT races. Kavanagh entered two Formula One Grands Prix in 1958 with his own Maserati 250F, firstly in Monaco where he failed to qualify, and lastly in the Belgian Grand Prix where he missed out on the race having blown his engine in practice, after having qualified 20th of 28 entrants. He also did some non championship events, with a best result 6th at the Syracuse GP

LOL this reminds me to the confusion Manx names can cause. For example, if you read older books you'll often come across the term Craig-ny-.... . Quite some place names on the Isle are starting, or better have started, with these five letters anyway.
Now, Manx as a language isn't as dead as Latin yet, since it still gets spoken but rarely written and the last natural speaker has passed away as well already.
Since it is a merely spoken language these days, lots of vocals melted together. And one of these instances would be the 'Craig' which became 'Creg' over time. So today, you sometimes find both references but only the way younger Creg has really survived.

Whilst I respect that in the article posted by @erwin greven it mentions the name Joe Graig more than once in relation to him being the Norton Team Manager, it must be an error or misprint because his name is very definitely Joe Craig as @Michael Ferner states.

Here is an article relating to his (Joe Craig's)time at Norton, posted on VintageNorton.com
http://www.vintagenorton.com/2011/04/jo ... n-big.html

or other references here in the book 'The Manx Norton'. In fact there is an entire chapter, called "Joe Craig, Team Manager Supreme": https://books.google.com.au/books/about ... edir_esc=y

Joe Craig or Joe Graig.... Those mistakes are very common when an article is written by a non-English writer. How many times Dutch names are getting anglicized or are incorrectly written.

Totally agree. I look at it as a positive indication of the importance of such history from the fact the stories are reported / posted in multiple languages

Yes, I'm sure Nick Louder or Jim Klark would be happy enough to get a mention as Formula One Champions of the past, to hell with the spelling. They're dead anyway, and who needs spelling skills in the age of FB and WhatsApp, WTF & LOL, CU

It is with great sadness to report the passing of Colin Seeley, who passed away yesterday, aged 84.
Colin was a successful sidecar racer as well as a motorcycle designer and constructor (Yamsel, Seeley Condor, Seeley Matchless)
In 1992 he was involved in running the Norton Rotary race team.

Rest in peace, Colin

Dakar motorcycle rider Paulo Goncalves dies after crash

Image

Veteran motorcycle rider Paulo Goncalves has passed away following a crash on Sunday's seventh stage of the 2020 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.

Goncalves was contesting his 13th Dakar for Indian manufacturer Hero, and was 46th overall when the rally resumed on Sunday following yesterday's rest day.

During Sunday's 339-mile Riyadh to Wadi Al Dawasir test, the Portuguese rider crashed after 171 miles - in an area that alternated between wavy sand planes and dunes - at 1018am local time.

A medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene, where Goncalves was found unconscious after going into cardiac arrest.

After attempts were made to resuscitate him at the scene, Goncalves was airlifted to Layla Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Goncalves is the first competitor to have died contesting the Dakar since Michal Hernik in 2015.

He has helped Cyril Despress out of a mudhole one year but instead of saying thanks Cyril just ride away and would win the Dakar that year.

RIP, Paulo

I dont think so.... Colin was born lived and ran his business in England, South London / Kent in particular..... Alastair Seeley is from Northern Ireland.

Sadly, Dutch motorcyclist Edwin Straver died from injuries sustained in 2020 Dakar Rally.

Image
Dutch motorcycle racer Edwin Straver died during the early hours of Friday morning, succumbing to injuries sustained in a fall in the Dakar Rally last week. The 48-year-old racer was seriously injured on January 16th, when he fell in the 11th and penultimate stage of the race, NOS reports.

Straver was resuscitated at the scene. It took emergency workers 10 minutes to get his heart beating again. He was rushed to a hospital in Riyadh, where examination showed that he had broken one of his upper neck vertebrae. He succumbed to his injuries earlier this morning.

This was Staver's third Dakar Rally. Last year he finished 30th in the general classification, and 49th the year before.

Straver is not the only life lost in the Dakar Rally this year. Portuguese motorcycle racer Paulo Gonçalves died on Sunday due to a cardiac arrest.
