Bottom post of the previous page:

They're back out now, shame for them given they basically came from last to 1st.

SHock absorber mounting is broken... fixable but will take time, the win is gone and Scott will deffo take the title. Whincup and Lowndes look set to win unless they also have any issues.

They rejoined 18th. Sad end to a great drive from both Tander and SVG to lead so close to the end of the race, as said from a back row start.

Whincup/Lowndes win from Mostert/Moffat. Holdsworth gets his first podium since 2012 and Randle his first ever.

McLaughlin officially wraps up his 2nd series championship.

Race was enjoyable in the first third but it petered out after that aside from the SVG drama.

Official finishing positions / race result

Interestingly, when T888 were running 1&2 they would have left Sandown leading the Teams Championship by nearly 50 points. The late trouble for SVG means DJRTP now lead the Team gig by 116 points with just Newcastle to go

Forgot to mention that James Moffat finished 2nd (with Chas Mostert)in the car liveried as a tribute to his Father Alan Moffat's Transam ATCC car from back in the day, on Multi Champion and ATCC Legend Alan's 80th birthday.
I think Alan Moffat was at Sandown but I know he is suffering from Dementia and not in the best of health, so I think not having a high profile day with media for obvious reasons.

Also Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup took out the Pirtes Enduro Cup, the championship for the three Enduro rounds. Lowndes also won the Pirtek Cup last year, (with Steven Richards as his co-driver) so Craig becomes the first driver ever to win back to back Pirtek Cup titles.

Coates Hire Newcastle 500

The drivers championship may be settled, with Scotty Mac tieing that up at Sandown, but the Team championship is very much alive as we go to Newcastle for the final round of VASC this year.

The track is a street circuit.... nice setting though.
Nestled on the beautiful, sun-drenched eastern coastline of NSW, Newcastle is just over two hours’ drive north of Sydney. Where stunning beaches, fascinating working harbour, eclectic arts scene and a laidback lifestyle, all shine through the shadow of an industrial heritage.

An onboard lap of the circuit from last year with Craig Lowndes: https://www.facebook.com/supercars/vide ... 253610866/

Chaz Mostert's Guide to the Newcastle Street Circuit

Currently the team points are as follows, just 16 points between DJRTP and T8 Red Bull Holden:

1 Shell V-Power Racing Team 6101
2 Red Bull Holden Racing Team 5985
3 Bottle-O/Supercheap Auto Racing 5015
4 Monster Energy/Milwaukee Racing 4732
5 Penrite Racing 4544

Sadly it is the last time (for a while anyway) that we see entries in the V8s from Garry Rogers Motorsport, the long standing ATCC operator calling it a day following the sudden loss of his backer, and an ongoing dispute with the VASC over the way the V8s are run these days. GRM will make themselves busy with their involvement in TCR Australia and their construction and running in the S5000 series. I for one have been a long time supporter of GRM, and the Supercars paddock will miss his larrikin sense of humour.... and of course his habit of supporting young talented drivers, having weaned the likes of Tander Whincup and Scotty Mac for raw youngsters into legends of the sport.

Image

Image

There is a summary of some of his antics here: https://www.supercars.com/news/champion ... id-antics/

All the V8 teams will be putting on some kind of tribute to GRM to honour his 24 years involved in Supercars over the weekend.. I suspect that Garry will have something special outfit / prank wise this weekend to celebrate his time in V8s

It is also the last time we will see the Nissan Altimas, with Kelly Racing confirming the 4 car Nissan team will next year become a 2 car Mustang team. This has led to the departure of SImona de Silvestra whose stint in V8s comes to an end, and she moves to Europe for a role with the Porsche Formula E team. We will likely see her back for the enduros next year, schedule permitting.

Last year we saw SVG having his Saturday race win taken away for a pit stop infringement, which helped Scotty Mac seal his first VASC title on the Sunday.

The format consists of two 95 lap races, one each Saturday and Sunday, with the accompanying qualifying and top 10 shootouts. Today is just practice.

P1 has been and gone... Scott McLaughlin has pipped David Reynolds to top spot in Practice 1 by 0.0122s.
Top 10: McLaughlin, Reynolds, Whincup, Hazelwood, Winterbottom, Van Gisbergen, De Pasquale, Mostert, Holdsworth and Kelly.
Only 0.59s covered the top 10.

I see Luff is in for Scott Pye in the WAU #2 Commodore. Apparently Pye is unwell, but likely to be ok tomorrow.

Pye ran in P1 and this is what he had to say. He didnt make P2 as said, despite his confidence he would.
Pye: "Obviously got something overnight and I think it was gastro, but I won’t describe the symptoms. Not very pleasant.

"I’m just a bit tired now. I only slept two hours last night. Ill sleep between these two sessions then go again this arvo.

"That was an important session just to see how I feel in the car. My head’s been killing all morning. Fortunately, doctor Carl and those guys looked after me and got me back on track."

Qualifying for todays 250klm race was held this morning

Whincup, De Pasquale, Waters, Coulthard, Holdsworth, Slade, Courtney, McLaughlin, Reynolds and Van Gisbergen will progress to the Armor All Top 10 Shootout.

Scott Pye returned to the fray after a night in hospital for the gastro that put him out of P2 yesterday. He did not go too well, finishing 15th after a visit to the barriers. He was out for the rest of the session having brought out a red flag.

There is a chance of rain falling over the rest of the weekend so that might spice things up a bit, especially given all the white lines that go with a street circuit.

Big dramas in the Toyotas, the race leader crashed head on into the wall at turn 2 on the first lap of the first race and cleaned up a bunch of cars. Not sure if he missed his brake marker or if something went wrong with the car because he was never going to make the corner with the speed he was carrying.

Race 1 is go.

McLaughlin got stuck on the outside at the first turn and the Red Bull cars went 1-2 but Scott seems to be staying with them.

Le Brocq backed it into the fence and now his roof panel has been knocked ajar.

DePasquale into the garage, a real shame after qualifying provisionally on pole for today's race.
