They drove that car?

A thread dedicated to forgotten rides with certain teams by well known drivers, or perhaps a lesser known driver driving for a well known team. The concept of this thread is based on the many fill in drivers we have seen over the past couple of seasons in all forms of motorsports due to COVID.

To start off, Jimmie Johnson driving the #81 Truck for Randy Moss Motorsports (yes that Randy Moss) in the NASCAR Truck series race at Bristol in 2008. After qualifying 9th, Jimmie led 29 laps before being taken out in a crash, leading to a 34th place finish. This is to date the only start Jimmie has ever made in the NASCAR Truck series.

Arturo Merzario had a one-off outing with Shadow at Austria in 1977, overshadowed (pardon the pun) by team-mate Alan Jones scoring Shadow's only win, Art retired with gearbox problems after 29 Laps.

Nyck de Vries makes a habit of it....of course his race debut at Monza is well known, but lets not forget he practiced on Friday for Aston Martin F1 so was at the track the following day. Suddenly prior to P3 Albon was hit with Appendicitis requiring immediate surgery. Nyck found himself in the Williams for P3 and the rest of the weekend.

However at Le Mans earlier this year he was present basically reserve for the Toyota Hypercar team, pretty much a coffee making role, when ACO officials prohibited TDS Racing x Vaillante LMP2 driver Philippe Cimadomo to start the race. Cimadomo was excluded from the running of the French classic on Thursday evening by stewards after being involved in three separate incidents in practice.. De Vries was there on the spot at Le Mans got into the car vacated by Cimadomo.

This next one is probably stretching the rules a bit but should be mentioned just for the hell of it.

Hans Heyer at the 1977 German GP.

Hans had never entered a GP before, being more of a European Touring car driver. (I think he was ETCC and German Touring Car Champion. He had never AFAIK even tested an F1 car although he had tried an F2 car. Anyway Heyer decided to enter the GP ( Icant remember if he bought the drive or had a sponsor for the day and I am going from memory.... @Michael Ferner being a local lad at the time will I am sure know the details better than I can recall. I recall it was the German ATS team (the remnants of Penske). I do know that usually they entered just Jarier but for Germany Heyer joined Jarier in a second car. The car was not a good car for sure

Anyway Hans practiced, but failed to qualify for the race. It was in the days when more cars would turn up and have to qualify for the 24 spots on the grid. He failed to qualify and was thus relegated to 3rd reserve. He would be allowed to start if a few cars failed on their way to the start.

Hans, being a local knew all the officials and marshalls very well, so he lined ready to start if others failed. No one stopped him so Heyer joined the back of the grid. As it happens the starting lights were not working so a flag was used to start the race. There was quite a lot of confusion and bumping, a couple of cars got together. Anyway in all the confusion Heyer just joined the race even though he was not meant to do so. His marshal mates certainly didnt stop him. He ran round for a number of laps before his gearbox linkage failed.

It was only after he had stopped that race officials were even aware he had started the race unofficially. So they promptly disqualified the already stopped Heyer. He never got a black DSQ flag though as he had already stopped before they realised.

His antics do give him the unique record of being the only F1 driver to be credited with a DNQ (did not qualify),a DNF (did not finish), and a DSQ in the same race, :whistling: :haha:

Hans Heyerat Hockenheim for the 1977 Geman GP in the ATS

I have a feeling that a few years before at the1974 US GP Tim Schenken decided to take the start despite failing to qualify .... unlike Heyer the officials noticed the extra car and he was black flagged and disqualified.

Little Art also drove for Copersucar/Fittipaldi at Monza in 1975 and finished 11th.

Andre Lotterer - 2014 Belgian Grand Prix Caterham.

With Tony Fernandes, Caterham's owner and benefactor having bailed mid season, Caterham were looking for funding..... Former F1 driver Bertrand Gachot (yes, he who maced a cab driver and was jailed, leading to Jordan letting Peter Sauber buy Schumacher the drive that started his career, ironically also in Belgium) offered the team a sponsorship deal for that year (2014) Belgian GP if they agreed to put Belgian-born Lotterer in the car.

Needing the cash, Caterham agreed and ran Lotterer alongside Marcus Ericsson for a surprise F1 debut at Spa. He out-qualified the Marcus by almost a second but sadly retired just one lap into the race with a mechanical failure.

That was his only GP ever.

Lotterer was already a 3 time Le Mans winner and World Endurance Champion, not to mention Formula Nippon Champion, and personally I was surprised he never got any F1 opportunities beyond a one-off pay drive with Caterham

Another memorable one off was Markus Winkelhock for Spyker at the 2007 European GP at Nurburgring.

He had been a third driver with Midland at 4 GPs in 2006, and was officially the Spyker test driver.... when Albers sponsorship to pay for his Spyker dried up mid year Spyker put Winkelhock in for the European GP. A highly memorable race as although he qualified last, as the cars did their warm up lap the skies darkened. Spyker made the call for Markus to come to pitlane. They fitted wets and crossed their fingers as he started from pitlane.. The rest of the field charged off on slicks as the skies opened with a torrential downpour. Markus, on wets passed the field who had either gone off in the conditions or stopped for wets themselves. Markus was in the lead and led the race for 7 laps,..... 1 lap in his own right, then 2 laps behind the SC before the race was red flagged,..... he then led a further 3 laps at the SC led restart. By then conditions had started to dry out and he fell down the order until on lap 13 he retired with a mechanical failure.

He can claim to have led Lewis Hamilton on every lap of his GP career though. He is also im pretty sure the only guy to go from last to first in a lap, and one of very few to lead their debut Grand Prix.

In that case.

May I present...

...the late David Leslie. Better known for his time in the British Touring Car Championship in which he was Runner-up in 1999, David was briefly an F1 driver, albeit only in the British F1 Championship in 1979, he entered four rounds in a Chevron B41, his best result was 4th at Oulton Park.

After retiring from full time competition in 2013, Jeff Burton ran four final races in 2014, the first two coming for Michael Waltrip Racing in the #66 car, before he was called up as a fill in driver for Tony Stewart for two races as Stewart elected to sit out after the incident involving Kevin Ward Jr.

Rally legends Jimmy McRae and the late Colin McRae in the British Touring Car Championship.
Image
Jimmy drove the Ecosse Motorsport BMW M3, usually driven by Hugh Chalmers, in four rounds of the 1990 Season. His best result was 5th in Class B and 10th outright in the Donington 1 Hour Endurance Race. Prodrive wanted to run him in a 3rd M3 in 1991 but couldn't raise the necessary funds.

Prodrive ran Colin at the Knockhill rounds of the 1992 Season. He finished 8th in Race 1 and would have improved to 7th in Race 2 but was controversially disqualified for taking out Matt Neal.

The quote of what Steve Neal wanted to do after the incident, is a classic
.....Steve Neal, wanting to have a chat with Colin, infamously wanted to “find McRae, rip his head off, and shit down his neck!”
  :whistling:

Colin's comment recounting events was pretty good to, suggesting the fastest he went all weekend was running back to his motorhome after the race to avoid Neal! :haha:

I know. Colin did admit to not really being focused on the event in a 2006 interview.

Damon Hills first drive was Brabham. He qualified 2 times out of 8 races with the team.
Image

Karli Wendlinger was considered to be as fast as Schumacher - he made his debut in 1992 with March team:

Gianni Morbidelli drove for Ferrari in 1991, replacing Prost who was sacked just before the season end:

Mario Andretti had rather mediocre stint at Ferrari in 70s, but then he came back to Maranello in 1982 for last two races of the season:

Wendlinger actually made his debut in 1991. He replaced Ivan Capelli for the last two races.
